SOWA RIGPA PROGRAM

Sorig Academy offers authentic and comprehensive training courses in the Tibetan Science of Healing using contemporary, online learning tools.  We follow the Four Medical Tantras and other classical source texts, following the traditional oral instructions passed down by Dr. Nida Chenagtsang and other masters.  While strongly rooted in tradition, the goal of these courses it to learn to apply this precious, ancient wisdom in contemporary practice.

The course structure is based on the IATTM curriculum developed by Dr. Nida Chenagtsang and offered around the world.

Four Medical Tantras

The Four Tantras – Gyu Zhi,  is the foundational text of Sowa Rigpa.  Since being finalized by Yuthok Yonten Yompo in the 12th Century, this text has remained the core of Tibetan Medical education.    The text is divided into four sections, the Root Tantra, Explanatory Tantra, Oral Instruction Tantra, and Final Tantra.  Of these, the Oral Instruction Tantra is larger than the other three and explains the clinical treatment of disease in great detail.  The curriculum of IATTM and the Sorig Academy highlights the essential aspects of these texts, illumined with oral tradition and experiences used in contemporary practice.

  • ROOT TANTRA
  • EXPLANATORY TANTRA
  • ORAL INSTRUCTION TANTRA
  • FINAL TANTRA

ROOT TANTRA

The second Tantra explains all fundamental theory of the Sorig medical system.  The study of the Explanatory Tantra comprises most of the first two levels of training.

The Root Tantra is like a seed, containing all of the potential knowledge of Sowa Rigpa – the science of healing, in condensed format.  The material is organized in the form of trees, whose trunks, branches and leaves comprise all essential aspects of the medical system.

The Sorig Academy program begins with the TTM 1.1 Root Tantra module, an introduction into the tradition, theory and practice of Tibetan Medicine.
